Meet Garey

Being heavily involved in my community, I hear from neighbors and friends every day who bring up the same issues again and again.

It’s widely felt that no one is listening.

Special interests have the priority and profit over the people, while our taxes increase.

As a resident of Simpsonville (Five Forks) going on 20 years, I am running for Greenville County Council District 27. I believe it is time for a new perspective, a fresh set of eyes and a constitutional and fiscal conservative.

I was born in Indiana, one of thirteen siblings. Tragedy struck in our family as my father had passed away when I was five years old. The State of Indiana placed me and my siblings into foster care that led me through 4 foster homes and 3 orphanages. Being placed with families of multiple backgrounds and locations throughout the state. I lost contact with my siblings. I was involved with many activities as a child, including 4-H, Boyscouts and Basketball. I was enrolled into 7 different highschools by the time I graduated with 40 credits, 8 more than required at the time.
I decided to join the US Air Force and went to Basic training (Lackland AF Base) in San Antonio Texas. I was assigned to Sheppard AF Base Texas for Aircraft maintenance as a training technician. After completion of my initial training, I was assigned to Homestead AF base Florida. After a short stay, I was transferred to Eglin AF base Ft. Walton Beach Florida. I received orders to Bitburg Air Base, Germany. I stayed there for almost 10 years. There I was on temporary duty for most of that time which brought me from Morocco to Sweden. While in theatre I was a spokesperson for the Air Base and a Special Olympics coordinator for the base. I worked as an F-15 simulator manager, F-15 maintenance/ Egress instructor, engine test cell operator and hydraulic systems instructor.

As the Gulf war began in 1990, I was sent to the Persian Gulf. I was first stationed at a remote Air Base in Saudi Arabia. I was assigned as the runway supervisor for departing and returning combat aircraft. I was there for about 13 months then was sent to Turkey for 20 months. In 1994 I was ready to return to the US. After a couple years at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona, then Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, I decided to transfer from the active-duty USAF to active duty in the Indiana Army National Guard as a full time recruiter. I was assigned to an Artillery Battalion as the head recruiter. I was sent to Artillery school in Ft. Sill Oklahoma and returned to Indiana where I completed my BS in HR. I had received orders to go to Ft. Drum N.Y. as an Inservice recruiter (transitioning Soldiers). During my time in the military, I visited more than 120 countries of the world to include many in Europe, SE Asia, Africa and South America.

I met my wife, Katie; she was a drummer for the Army band. Before retiring, we were married. We moved to Greenville in 2006. We now have 3 children, 2 boys and a girl. We live in Five Forks, off five forks road and absolutely love it here. The charm is second to none. The pride we have within our community drives us all as a family to try to give back as much as we can. I serve on the SC foster care review board, work as a Substitute teacher for over 25 years (Greenville County Schools). I sub at 9 different schools within our area. I am an on-call school bus driver Regular Ed and Special needs (Greenville County Schools) for 5 years. I work with Special needs children as a mentor (GCS). I am a South Carolina High School League (SCHSL) Official for Basketball, Volleyball and Softball. I also referee for the local YMCA and the church league in downtown Greenville (CLBBY). We are members of Hallmark Baptist Church in Mauldin.

My time is spent volunteering and serving our community any way where there is a need.

I hold a BS in Human resource management and an MBA (Summa Cum Laude). I have over 25 years in the HR field and 20 years in the financial field. I am not a politician, but I know we have several difficult and complex problems to solve in Greenville County. No stranger to adversity and challenges, I overcame much without losing my resolve, be it during my early life as a foster child or during my service in the US Military. I’m ready for the challenge.

I hope to count on you in this campaign to Change Greenville County Council. Allow me to bring the peoples’ voices to the table

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Sincerely,
Garey Collins
Candidate for Greenville County Council District 27
